Make the first day of school a safe and healthy one

24 January 2018

The start of the new school year can be a busy time and one of excitement and anticipation. Here are some tips to help get your child’s school year off to a great start.

Pack a healthy lunch box

Encourage your child to help pack their own healthy lunch box. Include plenty of vegetables, fresh fruit, cheese, yoghurt, lean meat or protein, wholemeal bread and a bottle of water.

Encourage your child to be sun smart

Have your child apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen before they leave home and provide them with a tube so they can reapply it during the day. Ensure your child has a broad-brimmed hat and remind them to wear it whenever out in the sun.

Immunisation

It is recommended that parents ensure their child’s immunisation records are up to date. The Australian Childhood Immunisation Register is a Medicare initiative which can assist parents to obtain these records.

To reduce the incidence of meningococcal disease a free vaccine will be available for children aged 1 to 4 years throughout 2018.

Medication

If your child is on any form of medication advise the school and your child’s individual teacher. Try to ensure your child is also aware of the dosage and when to take it.

Posture

Most children have a school back pack. Help them to pack it and make sure its straps are adjusted properly so the bag’s weight is distributed evenly.
