Medical costs overseas

When you travel overseas you may not be able to get the same level of health care that you do in Australia.

No matter how healthy you are, think before you leave Australia about how to protect your health while travelling.

Does Medicare help with my medical costs when I’m overseas?

Yes, but only in some situations in some countries. The Australian Government’s Reciprocal Health Care Agreements (external site) can help with the cost of urgent or essential medical treatment, but only in some countries.

Remember that these agreements do not replace private travel health insurance.
