Mosquito warning for the Kimberley
Mosquito warning for the Kimberley
19 March 2024
Kimberley residents and travellers are urged protect themselves against mosquito bites after a rise in Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) and Ross River virus (RRV).
Mosquito activity is set to rise during the wet season, so anyone in the Kimberley should make sure to protect themselves, particularly while they are outside.
Protect yourself from mosquitoes by:
- wearing suitable long and loose clothing
- using effective mosquito repellents containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (also known as PMD)
- empty water from containers around your home or accommodation to stop mosquitoes breeding
Maintaining insect screens on houses and using mosquito nets when sleeping outside is also recommended.
