Familial Cancer Registry

The registry is a statewide service for people with a family history of cancer (inherited cancers).

It collects information about cancer across Western Australia and monitors the care of people on the registry.

Who is the registry for?

People from families with a history of cancer. This means if you have:

• a family member who develops cancer under the age of 50
• a family member who develops a second cancer which is different from the first
• more than one family member on the same side of the family who has developed cancer).

Why should I join the registry?

Benefits include:

• you or your doctor will receive reminders to ensure your condition is monitored at appropriate times
• you will be kept informed about topics of interest, receive the latest information on inherited cancer and local research projects
• the opportunity to have contact with other people who have had similar experiences or procedures.

The registry does not take the place of the doctors who care for you.

How do I join?

You can contact the registry yourself or you may be referred by:

• your GP
• Family Cancer Program staff
• a family member.

Only people who give their consent can be placed on the register and all your information will be kept confidential.

Other than your doctors, your information will not be given to anyone else, including insurance companies, employers or government agencies.

Can I remove my name from the registry?

Yes. You can remove your name from the registry at any time. Names may also be taken off if genetic testing shows you do not have at risk of developing an inherited cancer.

What information does the registry collect?

The registry collects cancer-related information only. If there is any information missing, the registry may contact your doctor.

How does the registry know which doctors to contact?

You will be asked for your doctors details, including your GP, when you join. You can ask us not to contact or send information to specific doctors if you want.

Who manages the registry?

The registry is an important part of the Familial Cancer Program managed by Genetic Services of Western Australia.
